Hair removal: the bare facts!

The treatment of body hair has been subject to fashion and the influence of celebrities even since the Middle Ages with European women in the 1500’s abandoning hair removal when the queen of France in the 1500s, objected to it.

There are many forms of hair removal, for example shaving, creams, plucking, waxing and IPL/Laser. Let’s have a look at these.

Shaving and trimming is performed with razors or scissors. The major disadvantage with this procedure is that it needs to be performed every day.

Depilatory creams/gels are available at most pharmacies. They usually need to be repeated every 2-3 days. It is a messy and time-consuming and can also cause rashes.

Tweezing/plucking/threading is very time-consuming and is only an option for small areas. It needs to be repeated every 3-6 weeks.

Waxing involves applying a warm wax and removing it by peeling or stripping. It is not permanent. It is safest to have your waxing performed by a therapist trained in the technique as home waxing has a higher risk of burning, blistering and bruising. Sugaring is very similar to waxing.

Electrolysis uses an electrical current to destroy the hair follicle. Electrolysis is often described as very painful and does have the potential to cause scarring.
IPL/Laser works by heating the hair follicle, which causes it to fall out. There are hundreds of different IPL/Laser machines on the market, ranging in price from $3000 to $200,000 and you definitely get what you pay for. Do not get fooled by advertising for cheap laser hair removal because it is cheap for a reason. Many clients come to us after these "too-good-to-be-true" deals, with burns and untreated hairs. To ensure your treatment is safe and effective make sure your IPL/Laser practitioner is a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (FNZSCM) or directly supervised by one.
The number of IPL/Laser treatments depends on the colour of the hair and surrounding skin. Treatments are performed every 6 weeks to 3 months. Treatments take from 15-60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. There is minimal downtime and most treatments can be done in a lunch break.
It is also possible to promote hair growth if you have thinning eyelashes and eyebrows. Eyelashes and eyebrows provide definition to our face enhancing our look. Latisse Lash Science is a prescription lash and brow treatment that is scientifically proven to help you achieve significantly thicker and longer eyelashes and eyebrows.
